The Dona Ana County Historical Society announces new grants for Scholarships and Research

The Dona Ana County Historical Society provides scholarships and a grant to support research in the history, archeology, anthropology and ethnohistory of Dona Ana County and the Southwest border region. RESEARCH GRANT
Professional, amateur, independent or student researchers who are involved in historical research and whose projects are about the history, archeology, anthropology, or ethnohistory of Dona Ana County are encouraged to apply for this $500 grant. Each applicant must provide the historical society with a completed application submitted by December 1 that explains the following: 1) research objectives, 2) approach for collecting data and doing an analysis, 3) expected outcome of the research, 4) plans for sharing the information publicly, 5) a projected time line and deadline for completion of the project, 6) a budget that details projected expenses. The society requires all recipients to submit an article based on their research to the Southern New Mexico Historical Review by September 1st of the following year. The MARY & J. PAUL TAYLOR NEW MEXICO STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP
The history of Dona Ana County has been influenced by historical developments in many nearby regions. NMSU graduate and undergraduate history students who are researching topics on local history, the Southwest and the U.S./ Mexico border region are eligible for this $1,200 scholarship. Students who have works in progress may also apply. Each applicant must submit a completed application to the head of the NMSU Department of History by December 1, selection by December 15. The application must explain the following: 1) research objectives, 2) approach for collecting data and doing an analysis, 3) expected outcome of the research, 4) plans for sharing the information publicly, 5) a projected time line and deadline for completion of the project, 6) a budget that details projected expenses, 7) a sample of a previously written paper, 8) two letters of recommendation. The Society requires that all recipients submit an article based on their research to the Southern New Mexico Historical Review by September 1st of the following year. In addition, students will be expected to present their research at a regularly scheduled meeting of the Society. Click here to download an application form. National History Day Scholarship This $250 scholarship is presented annually to a high school graduating senior from Southwestern New Mexico who participates in the state competition of National History Day and who will be continuing his or her education at one of New Mexico's colleges or universities. Immediately following the southwestern regional NHD competition, 12th graders who are going to the state competition will be notified by the regional coordinator of their eligibility for this scholarship. Each applicant must submit a completed application to the Society by May 30th that includes the following: 1) their interest in history, 2) their future academic plans, 3) explanation of their reason for applying, 4) an official high school transcript, 5) a copy of the students NHD bibliography and process paper or completed paper, 6) two letters of recommendation, one from a teacher and one from a person in the applicants community. The Scholarship Committee will review all applications and notify the winner by July 1. The award will be given following college registration in the fall when the recipient provides the Society with a written request and evidence of enrollment in a New Mexico college or university.
